Jean-Baptiste Courtois studied organ with Jean Langlais and André Fleury before entering the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he won four Premier Prix. From the age of 14, he played the Cavaillé-Coll organ at the church of Saint-Ignace in Paris, where he was organist until 1989, when he was appointed titular organist of the gallery at the church of Saint-Gervais, on the magnificent instrument belonging to the Couperin family. His concert activities have taken him to France and various European countries, as well as the United States and Russia.
After teaching at the Conservatoire national de région de Lille and the Université de Paris-Sorbonne, and then directing the Conservatoire d'Antony, he joined the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris in 1995 to head the instrumental disciplines department. Appointed professor of counterpoint at the Conservatoire in 2000, he has since divided his time between teaching and performing.
